Measure Google's AI search experiences with several kinds of evidence: owner reports for observed exposure, sampled answers for what was said and cited, and enquiry data for business outcomes. AI Overviews and AI Mode are different experiences, so preserve the surface and conditions of each observation. Use the current Search Console reports where available, and keep their totals separate from third-party samples. Visibility becomes useful when it helps you decide which pages, information or customer journeys to improve.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode require separate descriptions in a measurement plan.
- Google's current generative AI performance report provides impressions for supported Search AI features.
- An impression, a click, a cited page and a qualified enquiry measure different things.
- Keep the questions, languages, market settings, dates and missing results visible in sampled tracking.
- Connect a visibility change to a specific investigation before deciding to spend more.
Start by naming the experience you observed
A report that says “we checked Google AI” leaves an important question unanswered. Was it an AI Overview in a results page, an AI Mode conversation, or an ordinary search result? The interpretation depends on the answer.
AI Overviews provide an AI-generated response within Search when Google's systems decide that format is useful. AI Mode offers a more conversational search experience, including follow-up questions. Neither should be treated as a fixed list of links identical for every person and every query.
For a business, the practical difference is the observation you need to preserve. An Overview check should record whether an Overview appeared and which sources it showed. An AI Mode observation should also preserve the relevant question and conversational context. A screenshot detached from those conditions is weak evidence for a month-to-month comparison.
For Saudi-focused work, record the language and market context rather than assuming that a test is local because the question mentions Saudi Arabia. Product availability, provider support and the user's experience are separate matters to verify. This article explains a measurement method; it does not claim that a third-party connector reproduces every Saudi customer's interface.
SEO remains part of the foundation
Google's current guidance for generative AI search says these experiences rely on core Search systems and that established SEO work remains relevant. An inaccessible page or an unhelpful service description does not become a stronger source because a proposal calls the work GEO.
Check the intended pages, their content and the relevant owner settings. Google documents a Search generative AI control for managing inclusion in supported features. Review the actual property setting with its owner; inclusion creates eligibility, not a promise that the site will be shown.
This is why measurement should lead back to implementation. If the problem is technical access, use the technical SEO guide. If the page is accessible but fails to answer the customer's question, improve the information. Tracking more queries does not repair either problem by itself.
Use the current owner reports carefully
Google's generative AI performance report for Search, checked on 26 September 2026, reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device and date views. Report access and sufficient impressions still need checking for the property.
The documented metric is impressions. Do not invent a dedicated AI click or revenue breakdown that the report does not supply. Its data overlaps with the Web Search performance data, so adding the two totals as independent reach would double-count exposure. Page aggregation can also differ from property-level totals; exported unavailable values may appear as zeros.
For an owner, the useful starting question is whether relevant pages are receiving observable exposure in the intended market. Preserve the report period and filters, and check the actual interface before making a reporting commitment. Platform documentation and report availability can change.
These owner records complement sampled answers. They do not turn a third-party question panel into a census of every user, nor does a sampled panel reproduce Search Console's reporting population.
Keep four kinds of evidence side by side
- Owner reportsWhere exposure was recorded.
- Sampled answersWhat was said and cited.
- Website behaviourWhat recorded visitors did.
- Enquiry qualityWhich contacts mattered to the business.
Swipe across the table to see all columns.
| Evidence | What it helps you understand | What else you need |
|---|---|---|
| Owner search reports | Recorded exposure and search interaction under the report's definitions. | Relevant filters, comparable periods and knowledge of reporting limits. |
| Sampled answers and sources | What a particular answer said, named and cited. | Preserved questions, settings, dates and enough repeats to examine variation. |
| Website behaviour | Which recorded visits reached useful pages or actions. | Correct tracking and an understanding of missing or unattributed activity. |
| Sales or enquiry records | Whether contacts were relevant and progressed commercially. | Consistent qualification and feedback from the team handling them. |
An impression is an exposure measure. A click records a transition. A citation identifies a referenced source in an answer. A qualified enquiry is a business judgement about a contact. Google's definitions of impressions and clicks are worth checking before combining metrics with similar-looking labels.
A rise in impressions can be encouraging even before enquiries change, but it is not revenue. A fall in clicks deserves investigation, but it does not automatically prove an AI feature caused the decline. Demand, page changes, seasonality, competing results and tracking changes are alternative explanations to examine.
Build a question panel that resembles the decisions you care about
Begin with the services and buying questions that matter commercially. Include discovery questions, comparisons and practical questions that arise before contacting a provider. Preserve branded questions separately so recognition of a known name does not inflate unbranded discovery.
For example, a fictional Saudi maintenance company might track questions about choosing a service provider, understanding a maintenance contract and deciding whether emergency support is included. Those questions connect to actual service pages and customer concerns. A collection of generic technology questions may produce attractive screenshots without helping the business.
Arabic questions should express the same intended decision where a bilingual comparison is planned. Literal translation may change the meaning or sound unlike a real customer's question. Keep the Arabic wording under editorial review and record any revisions, so a wording change is not mistaken for a visibility improvement.
Agree the sample before the baseline. Record each platform and surface, language, market setting, question, date, usable answer and cited URLs. Keep no-Overview outcomes and unavailable tests distinct. The scan interpretation guide explains those report states in detail.
When a question changes substantially, start a new comparison or identify the break. This protects the business from a misleading success story produced by replacing difficult questions with easier ones. Additional questions can expand understanding; they should not erase the original baseline.
Investigate patterns before choosing the remedy
Suppose repeated relevant answers cite comparison pages but your website offers only a brief service description. That is a reason to examine whether customers need a clearer explanation of alternatives, scope or limitations. It is not an instruction to copy the cited page or reproduce every heading.
Suppose Arabic observations are weaker than English. Check coverage and question equivalence first. Then examine the Arabic service information, technical language routing, terminology and external references. Our Arabic visibility guide provides the corresponding implementation questions.
Suppose your website is cited but enquiries remain weak. Read the answer for accuracy, then test the destination page and the contact journey. The citation might point to an informational article that does not naturally lead to a service decision. The page may need a helpful next step rather than a stronger sales pitch at every paragraph.
Finally, if an answer describes your company incorrectly, locate the possible source of the error. Correct your own outdated facts and pursue legitimate corrections on relevant external pages. Preserve the original observation and recheck. Do not promise that one correction will immediately update every AI response.
Connect reporting to business value
Agree what counts as a useful enquiry before judging the programme. A form submission, a click on WhatsApp and a signed contract should not share one undifferentiated “conversion” total.
Google Analytics key events can record actions that matter to the business. The choice of action remains yours. A contact-button click can be a useful signal, but your team still needs to establish whether a conversation occurred and whether it was relevant.
Ask customers how they found you when that fits the conversation. Keep self-reported discovery separate from recorded referrals. A buyer may remember an AI answer but return later through another route; equally, an AI-related referral does not tell you everything that influenced the decision. Accept partial attribution rather than inventing a complete path.
A concise review should state the observed change, confidence in the comparison, relevant work delivered and recommended next action. If the data is insufficient, name the missing evidence and the cheapest useful way to obtain it. More elaborate dashboards are not always the best next investment.
How Mayar Vision approaches the work
We connect measurement with the pages, Arabic content, authority signals and customer journeys that may need attention. The Free Scan offers an initial sample; deeper diagnosis adds context and a prioritised plan. A monthly programme is appropriate when continued monitoring or implementation will support decisions.
The current scan design samples Google results and AI Overview observations where supported. It should not be described as AI Mode tracking unless that additional surface is explicitly included and validated. The wider measurement plan can use owner reports and agreed manual or provider-supported observations with their limits stated.
Compare the service scopes and ask which evidence will guide the work. A useful programme should tell you what changed, what was delivered and why the next action deserves its place in the budget.
Frequently asked questions
Does a first-place ordinary result guarantee an AI citation?
No. A search position and selection as a source in an AI answer are different observations. Record both where relevant and inspect the actual answer rather than assuming one from the other.
Can Search Console now show AI-specific exposure?
Google currently documents a generative AI performance report with impressions for supported Search AI features. Check the property's available report and its definitions. Do not assume it provides every breakdown, click metric or commercial outcome you want.
Should we add AI impressions to overall Web Search impressions?
No, not as independent reach. Google's documented AI report includes data from Web Search performance. Use the views to understand the mix and context, and avoid adding overlapping populations.
Does no AI Overview mean our website failed the test?
No. It means no Overview was observed for that query under the test conditions. Ordinary results may still be present. Keep that state separate from a measured AI answer that did not name or cite your business.
How often should we measure?
Choose a cadence that can inform decisions within the agreed scope. Preserve comparable questions and investigate meaningful changes. Repeating tests more often is not inherently useful when no one will interpret the variation or act on the findings.
