In short

SEO improves how people find and use your business information through search. GEO focuses on your presence in AI-generated answers: whether you are mentioned, which pages are cited and whether the explanation is accurate. They share much of the underlying work. A useful plan connects website fixes, helpful content and credible evidence with measurement across the search experiences your customers use. Buy clearly defined work and verified results, with each activity counted once.

Key takeaways
  • SEO remains part of preparing a website for Google's AI search features.
  • An AI mention, a citation, a website visit and a qualified enquiry measure different things.
  • Arabic content needs useful service detail and a working customer journey, alongside clear English information where relevant.
  • Ask which pages will change, who will implement the changes and how completion will be verified.
  • Build the first work plan around important customer questions and observed problems.

Start with the decision your customer is making

A hotel manager in Jeddah needs a company to maintain its air-conditioning systems. She might search for providers, ask an AI assistant what to compare, visit a shortlist of websites and contact two businesses through WhatsApp. This is an illustrative buying journey, not a claim about how every Saudi customer behaves.

At each step, the supplier faces a different question. Can the manager discover it? Does she understand which equipment and locations it supports? Can she verify its experience? Is it straightforward to request an assessment?

SEO and GEO are useful when they help a business answer those questions. Their names matter less than the information, technical work and evidence behind the offer. This guide explains the differences so you can discuss a proposal, recognise shared work and decide where to begin.

If the information journey itself is unfamiliar, our introductory guide explains how pages become search results and AI answers. You can also read this guide independently.

What SEO means in practical terms

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. Google's introductory guidance describes helping search engines understand content and helping people find useful information through search. It covers much more than inserting a few words into a page. Google's SEO starter guide

A keyword is a word or phrase someone uses to search. For the maintenance company, “commercial AC maintenance Jeddah” is a starting clue about a customer's need. The page must then answer the questions behind that phrase: suitable systems, service coverage, planned maintenance, urgent requests and the information required for a quotation.

We recommend assessing three connected parts of the website. First, can the important page be reached and understood? Second, does its information help a suitable customer assess the service? Third, can that customer take the next step without encountering an unusable form or unclear contact process?

Technical SEO addresses the website conditions that affect discovery and processing. An index is a search engine's organised collection of information about pages. If a developer accidentally leaves an instruction excluding a service page from indexing, the owner should understand which page is affected and what must change. A report that merely says “indexability issue” has left the explanation unfinished.

Content work addresses what the page actually tells the customer. For our supplier, a polished paragraph about excellence would leave important gaps if it omitted the equipment covered. A useful content brief would specify those missing facts and identify who in the business can confirm them.

What GEO adds to the conversation

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It is used for work aimed at visibility in AI-generated answers. AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is another label you may encounter. Ask providers what they include under each term, because the deliverables need to be explicit.

Google states that its generative search features build on its search ranking and quality systems, so existing SEO foundations remain relevant. A separate GEO label does not create a separate set of Google eligibility rules. Google's generative AI guidance

For a business, additional questions arise when a customer receives a written answer. Was your business named? Was your website linked as a source? Did the answer describe a service you actually provide? Did it introduce an incorrect claim about your location or availability?

Those questions call for answer-level observation, checking the cited material and investigating inaccurate descriptions. They also call for clear decisions about which platforms, languages and customer questions matter to the business. A dashboard showing an unexplained score does not answer them.

Our working approach is to use one improvement plan, with explicit measurement for each relevant search experience. That keeps a service-page rewrite connected to all the places it may help a customer, while making the extra observation and analysis visible.

Shared work and additional work

The following is a buying guide for discussing scope. It is an illustrative division of responsibilities, not a universal industry definition or a promise that an activity produces a citation.

Swipe across the table to see all columns.

Work areaShared foundationWhat an AI-focused assessment adds
Important service pagesClear scope, practical detail, accessible content and useful internal links.Check whether sampled answers describe the service accurately and identify the pages they cite.
Technical accessInvestigate whether intended public pages can be fetched and processed.Check relevant provider access separately and distinguish unavailable tests from observed absence.
Arabic and EnglishConsistent business facts and a usable journey in each language.Keep Arabic and English question sets and findings separate.
CredibilityVerifiable expertise, accurate listings and relevant external references.Examine which sources appear in answers and whether their claims about the business are accurate.
MeasurementSearch performance, enquiries and completed website work.Record answer samples, citations and available platform-owner reports, with their coverage.

A proposal might reasonably include both shared improvements and separate AI monitoring. Ask the provider to show that relationship. If “SEO content” and “GEO content” describe the same service-page revision, the scope should explain the distinct work behind each charge.

Different platforms need different checks

An AI feature within Google Search and a chat assistant are different products. A result observed in one does not establish your position in the other. Even a familiar brand name on the screen may cover several features and modes.

OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, associated with possible model training. A website owner's settings should reflect the intended use; a developer should check the actual rules before making changes. Allowing a crawler is not a promise that the business will appear in an answer. OpenAI crawler documentation

ChatGPT's search documentation also explains that location and conversational context can inform searches. That is one reason a personal test should be recorded with its conditions. How ChatGPT Search works

For the maintenance company, we would agree a manageable set of relevant questions and record the service area, language, platform, feature and date. An English question about national suppliers and an Arabic question about urgent work in Jeddah explore different needs. Combining them into a single unexplained percentage would make the findings harder to act on.

Understand mentions, citations and enquiries

A mention means the answer names your business. A citation means it links to a source supporting the answer. A citation can point to a third-party page rather than your website. A visit means someone reaches your site, while an enquiry means they contact you. A qualified enquiry meets your agreed business criteria.

Consider four possible observations. The assistant names the supplier but links to a directory. Another answer cites the supplier's maintenance guide without naming the company in the main text. A third sends someone to the site. A fourth produces a request for work outside the supplier's service area.

These observations have different value. Check the accuracy and relevance before celebrating the appearance. A citation attached to an outdated claim can create a problem, and an unsuitable enquiry can consume time without creating an opportunity.

For reporting, we recommend retaining counts alongside any calculated rate. “Named in three of twelve completed answers” is interpretable when the question list and collection conditions are available. It remains a sample of twelve answers, not an estimate of all customer conversations or market share.

Structured data is labelled information in a page's code. It can describe an organisation, a product or an article in a format that a supported system can process. It should accurately reflect the visible information. Google's structured-data guidance does not promise that valid markup will produce a rich result. Structured-data rules

For our supplier, correctly identifying the business would be a useful implementation task. It would not repair an unclear service description, verify an unsupported qualification or establish a guaranteed place in an AI answer. Ask what the markup represents and how it was checked.

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. An unlinked brand mention is a reference without that link. An AI citation is a source link within an answer. These terms describe different relationships; a proposal should name the work it actually includes.

Relevant external material might include an accurate trade listing or an attributable contribution explaining a technical problem. Buying large volumes of links for ranking manipulation carries a different purpose. Google's spam policies address manipulative link practices and large-scale content abuse. Google's spam policies

Our recommendation is to assess the relevance, accuracy and editorial substance of a proposed placement. A numerical target alone does not tell you whether a prospective customer would learn anything useful about the business.

Make the Arabic work specific

An Arabic version should let a reader make the same essential decision as an English reader. For the maintenance company, this means explaining the systems covered, locations served and how to arrange an assessment in understandable Arabic.

Begin with the questions staff receive. Preserve customer privacy when turning those enquiries into a working vocabulary list. Review how the service is described in quotations and sales conversations, then agree wording the business can support consistently.

We recommend checking the whole journey: language switch, service page, form, confirmation and follow-up expectations. A useful Arabic page loses practical value if the next step assumes information the visitor has not received. This is a customer-experience recommendation, not a claim about a special Arabic ranking factor.

The Arabic visibility guide develops this into a service-page example, bilingual checks and a measurement plan. It also explains where translation helps and where the business must supply missing facts.

Compare proposals using evidence of delivery

Before comparing prices, ask each provider to describe the pages, questions, languages and implementation responsibilities included. The following checklist can make that conversation concrete.

Swipe across the table to see all columns.

Ask forA useful answer would identify
The starting problemAffected page or customer question, observed evidence and why it matters.
The intended changeThe exact content, configuration or external information to be improved.
ResponsibilityWho supplies business facts, edits the website, approves wording and verifies completion.
MeasurementBaseline, collection method, relevant platform coverage and business outcomes to observe.
The limit of the promiseWhat the provider can deliver directly and what remains dependent on external systems or customer behaviour.

Google cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance. Treat a vendor's readiness score as that vendor's assessment, with a method you can examine. Evaluating third-party advice

For a recurring engagement, ask what will be implemented between reports. Monitoring may be the correct scope when you only need observation. Content development, technical repairs and authority work require their own responsibilities and capacity. Agree the distinction before buying a monthly service.

Choose a first work cycle you can verify

Start with one commercially important service. List the customer questions its page should answer, review the page in the relevant languages and inspect any consequential technical findings. This creates a bounded starting point for an internal team or a specialist.

For the hotel-maintenance example, an initial cycle could confirm indexing, replace a vague description with verified service detail, correct a misleading directory entry and test the enquiry form. Record the changes and check that each underlying problem was resolved.

Then repeat the agreed observations. With owner access, Google's generative AI report supplies link impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode; Bing's AI Performance reporting covers citations in supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Neither is a universal view of every assistant or a record of your sales. Google reporting and Bing reporting

Compare those observations with useful enquiries and the work completed. A change in visibility may justify investigation, but it does not by itself show what caused it. This discipline helps you decide whether the next investment should be a repair, another service page, better evidence or continued monitoring.

How Mayar Vision helps

Mayar Vision connects the shared SEO foundations with Arabic content and AI visibility measurement. We begin by identifying the gaps that matter to your business, then define the work required to address them.

The free visibility scan offers a starting sample. Where the questions require more investigation, an expert diagnostic can turn findings into a prioritised plan. We can implement agreed changes and provide continuing content, authority and measurement work when there is a clear ongoing need.

You can compare the available services or discuss your starting point. The useful outcome is a scope you understand: what will change, why it matters and how we will check the work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop SEO and buy GEO instead?

Review the work your business needs before changing labels. Keep useful website, content and search work, and add clearly scoped AI observation where it helps. Ask the provider to identify shared tasks so your plan does not pay twice for an unexplained duplicate deliverable.

Does GEO mean writing articles with AI?

No. The term concerns visibility in generated answers. AI-assisted writing is a production method, and a separate decision. An article still needs useful information, factual checking and an accountable editorial process, regardless of how its first draft was produced.

Can someone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend us?

A supplier can commit to defined research, edits and verification. Treat a promised recommendation in an independently operated assistant as a claim requiring scrutiny. Ask which question, version, location and period the promise covers and what evidence would demonstrate it.

Do we need a new website to start?

That depends on the existing site's limitations. We recommend establishing which important changes it can support before proposing a rebuild. A small set of targeted repairs and clearer pages may be a more proportionate first project.

When should we use monthly support?

When there is continuing work to do: changing services, new customer questions, content maintenance, relevant authority development or measurement that informs decisions. A defined problem with a clear completion point can be handled as a project. Ask for a work plan appropriate to your situation.
