What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
How optimizing for AI answers differs from traditional SEO — and why the difference matters for regulated brands.
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking: getting your page to appear as high as possible in a list of blue links. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) optimizes for something different — being the source an AI model actually pulls from, synthesizes, and cites when generating an answer.
The mechanics are different. Search engines rank pages using signals like backlinks, keyword relevance, and click-through behavior. AI models select sources based on how clearly structured, factually consistent, and well-defined your content and brand entity are — a page can rank well in Google and still never get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity if it isn't structured for machine comprehension.
This matters more, not less, for regulated industries. Health, medical, and nutrition content is held to a higher trust bar by AI platforms, precisely because inaccurate answers in these categories carry real consequences. That means GEO for a regulated brand isn't just a technical exercise — it has to be built on claims that are actually defensible.
In practice, GEO work includes structuring content with clear definitions and direct answers to likely questions, using structured data (schema markup) so machines can parse what your content is about, and establishing your brand as a consistent, well-defined entity across the web rather than a scattered set of disconnected pages.
