AI VISIBILITY
AI Overviews vs. Traditional Search Results
Why ranking #1 on Google no longer guarantees visibility, and what to optimize for instead.
Google AI Overviews now answer many queries directly at the top of the results page, often before a user ever scrolls down to the traditional blue-link results. For a growing share of searches, the AI Overview is the only thing a user reads.
This changes what 'ranking well' actually means. A page can hold the #1 organic position and still lose most of its visibility if it isn't the source the AI Overview draws from and cites. Being cited inside the overview is now often more valuable than the top organic slot beneath it.
The selection criteria are different too. AI Overviews tend to favor content that directly and concisely answers a specific question, comes from a source with clear topical authority, and is structured in a way that's easy to extract and summarize — rather than content optimized primarily around keyword density or backlink volume.
For brands in regulated categories, this shift is a genuine opportunity: firms that already produce accurate, well-substantiated content have a structural advantage once that content is properly formatted for AI extraction — the barrier is technical and structural, not about the underlying quality of the information.
